Swift
Swift is for the product that has to live on an iPhone as software. We keep that surface on the same API and the same design tokens as the site.
What it is
Swift is Apple's language for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. It replaced Objective-C as the default for new Apple work: safer memory, a modern syntax, and first-class SwiftUI. If you are writing a native Apple app in this decade, you are probably writing Swift.
It is also appearing on the server (Vapor) and, experimentally, beyond Apple. The centre of gravity remains Xcode, the SDK, and the App Store. Swift is how the iPhone app is actually said.
What it does
Teams use Swift for iPhone and iPad apps, Mac utilities, widgets, and Watch companions. SwiftUI for new surfaces, UIKit where the OS still demands it. Shared business logic sometimes lives in Swift packages consumed by more than one app.
We write Swift when the brief needs the device, not a wrapper. The API stays the same as the website. Sign-in stays the same. The language is native. The product is not a second company.
Why we use it
Native iOS when the web is not enough.
Tokens from the same Figma file as the site. The same API. No second identity. Certificates in your account. If a well-made web app would do, we will say so before anyone creates a target.
The phone should not invent a second company.
Built on it
Apple
All of Apple's own new apps are Swift, from Music to Shortcuts.
Lyft
A well-known Swift iOS codebase for riders and drivers.
The iOS app is a large Swift project.
Airbnb
Rebuilt much of iOS in Swift rather than keeping a web view as the product.
Stripe
iOS SDKs and example apps are Swift-first.
